The Arafura and Timor Seas (ATS) region faces environmental pressures that no single country can address alone. ATSEA focuses on five shared priorities that support sustainable development, regional coordination, and better outcomes for ecosystems and communities.

Crosscutting Issues

Mainstreaming climate resilience, gender equity, social inclusion and improved governance

Why this matters

Climate change and social inequality make marine governance more complex. The most vulnerable groups (women, Indigenous communities, and youth) often face the greatest risks and the fewest opportunities to participate.

What we are doing together

ATSEA promotes integration through:

  • Regional and site-level Climate Change Vulnerability Assessments (CCVAs)
  • Application of the ATSEA CCVA Guidance Toolkit in local planning
  • Implementation of the Gender Equity and Social Inclusion (GESI) Action Plan 2024–2033
  • Ensuring women represent at least 50% of livelihood beneficiaries
  • Promoting inclusive participation in governance, training, and decision-making
  • Effective and efficient regional coordination and resource mobilisation
Why this matters to your work

You may be building more inclusive policies or trying to adapt marine programs to a changing climate. We provide frameworks, examples, and support systems that can help you lead more equitable, future-ready initiatives.
