Zonation of Kolepom MPA

Kolepom Island Marine Protected Area (MPA) is located off the coast of Kolepom, or ‘Dolok’ Island, which is part of Merauke Regency, South Papua Province. Indonesia’s Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (MMAF) enacted this MPA through Ministerial Decree No.5 year 2023 on 5 January 2023. The MPA covers 356,337.90 Ha of ocean surrounding one of the outermost islands of Indonesia. Since 2019, the establishment process has been fully supported by the ATSEA-2 Project, working in collaboration with the local and provincial government, Coastal and Marine Resources Management Unit of Sorong (Loka Pengelolaan Sumberdaya Pesisir dan Laut/ LPSPL), the University of Musamus and members of local communities. The MPA has been established to protect species that are under threat of overexploitation and extinction, such as white snapper, shrimp, pelagic fish and sawfish. These species are subject to protection within the existing zones. Local livelihoods, such as fishing activities in the area, would also be safeguarded and geared towards more sustainable fishing practices in order to ensure the health of the marine and coastal environment.
