Where we work : Timor-Leste

Timor-Leste partners with ATSEA to protect marine habitats and support coastal development. National and municipal agencies work alongside ATSEA to improve marine area governance, fisheries sustainability, and local livelihoods. 

Key achievements from ATSEA-2 Project include: 

South Coast (Manatuto, Viqueque, Manufahi) 

• Rolled out Red Snapper EAFM Plan 

• Achieved 50% compliance on demersal fishing gear 

• Supported gear transition and post-harvest improvements 

• Launched Integrated Coastal Management plan with climate-adaptive home gardens and alternative livelihoods 

Lautem 

• Strengthened sea turtle conservation in coastal communities 

• Increased MPA management effectiveness in Nino Konis Santana (METT score rose from 24 to 46) 

Manufahi & Manatuto 

• Supported new MPA establishment through planning and consultations 

• Initiated planning for a new MPA with estimated 51,000 ha coverage 

• Conducted vegetation restoration and expanded resilient home gardens
